Well... After much "shoe-horning" of the kinds of things I love to paint into the theme of this weeks illustration friday theme, (Shy) I came up with this. I just couldn't envision drawing yet another doe-eyed naive sketch of a girl peeking out from mum's side, or a maybe a kitten or a puppy,
(not that there's anything wrong with that, but it really isn't me!) ... so here's my take.
A bizarre zombie coconut shy, presided over by a lank-haired sideshow freak, in which one throws coconuts at severed heads (of course!). The carnival's name is taken from the father of the modern zombie film, George Romero, who also appears as the central head, flanked left and right by Messrs Tom Savini (Movie make-up genius) and John Carpenter, the horror movie director and composer.
Taking the sage advice of "Do what you love." It turns out that THIS is what I love to do.!
(painting macabre illustrations, not throwing coconuts at severed heads!)
Thank you for viewing.

Great! Another coconut shy idea (better than mine which I haven't ACTUALLY even done yet).
ReplyDeleteWondering if they are a British thing, since I haven't seen anything other than timid animals and people... (Not that I've looked at ALL the entries).
Thank you so much for your comment, it's a real boost for my morale knowing that other illustrators are seeing my work, and find it worth commenting on, and I enjoy the feedback. The illustration friday briefs truly are a motivational boon. As for coconut shy's being an inherently British thing; I believe you're right. (admittedly I had to look it up, google at my fingertips can really make it easy for me to feign a breadth of knowledge!) but one explanation was that it was a progression from the "Aunt Sally" game from the late 1800's where coconuts were seen as an exotic prize. (unless of course your name was Wurzel Gummidge, then Aunt Sally herself probably would have been preferable!)
ReplyDeleteHave at last posted mine. It's a bit on the sweet side.
ReplyDeleteI have also found another coconut entry - Elizabeth Richardson's...and I think she MAY not be British! Coconut shy is not even in my dictionary, though the verb 'shy' is, meaning to throw sideways... It's all very educational this Illustration Friday thing is, and a way of producing work that wouldn't otherwise be done.
