This week's I.F. topic was Zoom. Yet again, trying not to do the glaringly obvious, I chose to try and depict the "dolly zoom" filming technique used extensively by Hitchcock to convey unease in the film "Vertigo."
Not wanting to do just a simple clip from the movie, I tried to give it a painted "pulp" style and imbue it with a little humour by including Hitchcock in one of his infamous cameo roles; and James Stewart looking more than a little aghast at his inappropriate antics given their perilous position.( although I know he was really lying prone on a film set)
Painted entirely in photoshop using the chalk brush.
Thank you for viewing.

You've nailed it! A really well executed painting with great colour and depth.
ReplyDeleteAny advice on painting in Photoshop? I'm primarily a vector guy but I really want to try something new.
Top work!
Thank you very much indeed, I'm incredibly flattered anyone would ask, especially from an illustrator with such polished work themselves!. I have no formal training in photoshop at all, and admittedly learned most of the techniques I employ from the instructional videos on youtube by Xia Taptara (idrawgirls is the name of his channel) and Feng Zhu, Dave Rapoza and others. The one major thing I picked up from most of the digital "painters" I've admired is to do your painting in Greyscale first of all to get all your tonal values down correctly. Then add your colours on a colour layer afterwards. Once you have your basic colour scheme layed in, only use "Eyedropped" colours and tones from within your piece to give it harmony. I also merge my layers down quite frequently and save, as having the "undo" function can stall me from making important artistic decisions. (I'm a serial procrastinator!) I try to have only two or three "active" layers at a time, but I know of other artists who have loads! I guess with most things of this nature it's a "how long's a piece of string" type question. If you have any more specific questions, please feel free to contact me by e-mail, I'd be only too happy to help if I can.
